The Challenge
The numbers of people displaced from their homes by climate change are likely to rise from tens of millions today to hundreds of millions by 2050. Although development funding for climate mobility has increased in recent years, it averaged only $300 million per year from 2002 through 2022. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC’s) newly established Loss and Damage Fund is authorized to support climate-displaced persons, but resources remain far below requirements. Building adequate support for climate migrants is an enormous task in which the UNFCCC, multilateral development banks, the UN system, and bilateral donors must play a significant part.
This 3-day, online symposium aims to contribute to knowledge, networks, and advocacy critical to building institutional capacity for supporting climate migrants.
