Enabling positive climate adaptation journeys: lessons learned from Africa and the Greater Caribbean
Abstract
Background
Climate mobility is one of the defining human challenges of our time. Escalating climate impacts—ranging from extreme weather to slow-onset changes in environmental conditions—are already reshaping the realities of communities across the globe. Projections suggest that over 200 million people may be displaced by climate-related drivers by 2050, while millions more could be stranded in increasingly vulnerable situations due to the erosion of their adaptive capacities and lack of systems to support planned, dignified mobility.
Enabling positive climate adaptation journeys—whether through staying, adapting, or moving—requires sustained collaboration across sectors. Governments, civil society, researchers, and the private sector must work together to generate and apply robust data and evidence, ensuring that adaptation strategies are inclusive, context-specific, and grounded in community needs. Cross-sectoral partnerships are essential to design and implement solutions that are equitable, forward-looking, and capable of supporting people’s choices and resilience in the face of climate impacts.
In this context, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) advances positive community transitions in climate-vulnerable areas through regional initiatives that support governments and frontline communities to anticipate, plan for, and respond to climate mobility. Panelists will share key insights and lessons learned from two of these initiatives enabled by GCCM: the Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (launched in 2021) and the Greater Caribbean Climate Mobility Initiative (2022).
