Strengthening Institutional Capacity to Support Climate Migrants in the Democratic Republic of Congo: Advocacy, Policy, and Action
Abstract
As climate change accelerates, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is projected to face increasing climate-induced migration due to intensified natural disasters, food insecurity, and conflict. This panel discussion aims to contribute to the development of effective institutional capacity for supporting climate migrants in the DRC, emphasizing the importance of advocacy, policy, and action.
Drawing from diverse perspectives and experiences, our panelists will explore the key challenges and opportunities in addressing climate-induced migration in the DRC. This includes understanding the drivers and impacts of climate migration in the DRC: Dr. Abubakar, an expert in climate change and migration, will discuss the complex interplay between environmental degradation, conflict, and displacement in the region. Strengthening policy frameworks and governance Mr. Francis, a policy analyst, will provide insights into the national and regional policy landscape, highlighting the need for comprehensive strategies that integrate climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and migration management. Grassroots initiatives and community-led adaptation: Ms. Naomi, a community leader and activist, will share her experiences working with local communities in the DRC to build resilience and facilitate sustainable solutions for climate migrants. Enhancing coordination and collaboration among stakeholders through Ms. Kanata, a humanitarian practitioner, will discuss the importance of fostering partnerships between government agencies, civil society organizations, and affected communities to improve service delivery and protection for climate migrants. Through this panel discussion, we aim to spark critical dialogue, share best practices, and identify key recommendations for strengthening institutional capacity to support climate migrants in the DRC. By bringing together diverse voices and expertise, we can contribute to more effective, inclusive, and sustainable approaches that address the urgent needs of climate migrants while fostering long-term resilience in the region.
